Question by KB: I have an algae problem in my koi pond!!! Ive think I’ve tried everything… Am I missing anything?
I have UV sterilizer to combat one form of algae, then i started to have problems with string algae. I added Barley strips. But my pond seems to turn green so quickly after a cleanup. Am i missing anything?

I have also battled this problem. The best thing is to purchase a granular algacide from Ponds 123 or something. A little pricey. Make sure that it is safe for fish. What it does is oxidizes so that it actually adds oxygen to the pond which is good for the fish. I also add pouches of bacteria. You can also add blue dye which tints the water and inhibits photosynthesis of the algae. This is the time to battle it while the weather gets warmer.

Winterizing a Shallow Koi Pond?

Question by : Winterizing a shallow koi pond?
My koi pond is not the recommended 3 ft. and is only 18 inches at it’s deepest part. I usually bring my koi in for winter but since they have gotten quite big this summer, I have decided to try to winterize the pond and leave them in it except for the smaller ones. So I will have about 4 left in the pond over winter. I plan to put some type of shelter in the bottom for them. I am able to aerate the pond and will be a floating heat device in it. I was also thinking about putting a plastic solar cover for pools (this one is like bubble wrap plastic) over it to keep the water from freezing solid, it is clear but still not sure if it will allow sufficient light to enter the pond and sufficient gases to escape. There are no plants in this pond. My question is, will my koi survive in a shallow pond in the Midwest where we have very cold freezes, and is the solar cover a good idea. This is about 150 gallon pond and about 5 ft. by 6 ft. in diameter with the trap-type liner. I have had these guys for a long time and hoping to have them around alot longer. Thanks for any feedback you can give me.

After. That way anything that gets through the bio filter is sterilized by the UV filter.

you can go to shops like an oriental place and buy stuff like bamboo or that funky looking trees. you can go to home depot or lowes or somewhere like that to get some flowers and those tiles you’re going to lay around the pit, where you will dig it out (i think) make sure the fish you buy matches how big the pond is and what water and how fast it’s filtering and what’s in it. i hope i can help.
it’s gonnaa be expensive man.

Answer by Steve
your set up sounds ok to me to my knowledge your filters are biological, regarding the other two things its a matter of choice a protein skimmer is just an extra to way to keep the water cleaner but they are expensive and the water purifier dechlorinates the water of the two the water purifier is probably the best one to get because it will save you money in the long run when you have to top up your water or do water changes and have to keep water safe in
